Synopsis
A young girl witnesses a clown rape and murder her mother. Many years later, the girl is confronted by the killer, who drives them both into the ocean. She makes it out of the car, and her new nightmare begins. Nothing seems real, nor does it compare to anything that was, before she was confronted. And there is water everywhere. Will she find out what's going on in time? You can't escape your demons.
Review
First off; this isn't so much of a remake of the 1962 film of the same name. This is more of an alternate version. Think along the lines of, Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2007). Same outline, but it has very different insides. Sometimes, this can be a good thing, or a bad thing. Sad to say, I think Wes Craven may have messed up with this one.
The atmosphere is alright. Nothing at all like the original. It's a little eerie in parts, but when you see the same scene of the crazed demon thing for the fourth time, you begin to realize that its more “cheesy” than it is scary. There are some scenes that may be a bit much for some people.
Movies like this one always irritate me, mostly from subject matter. A molesting clown who kills the victims mothers so that he can have his way with her? I'm sorry, but this isn't something I like to think about, nor see played out on screen. It's got that annoying little tic to it that always just gets under my skin.
The acting is pretty good in this, despite everything else. I wouldn't say it's fantastic, but the acting and music score, are this movies only saving grace. Everything else is too muddied up by the fast scene switching, and the confusion that you will receive. A lot of it seems to even play in reverse, which is a bit odd.
I really was expecting more on the gore side, coming from Wes Craven. But I can only recall maybe one scene in it with any gore at all, and it's so brief in the way that it's shown that's not even worth mentioning…or having a second look.
Wrap It Up
I hate saying this, because I loved the original, but I hated this one. It's not something I would even consider watching again, nor would I suggest anyone watching it a first time. The original, was made of art and atmosphere. This one was…Weird and rather boring, in my opinion. And the other ones "twist" ending, was a bit less expected, than in this one. You can see it coming from a mile away.
My suggestion; pass this one up and watch the classic. The classic is much scarier and darker than this one. Period.
